Gustav Adolf von Gotter (1692 - 1762) came from a family of commoners from Gotha. Following sojourns to England, France and the Viennese court, he entered the service of Frederick William I in 1728. He later gained the trust of Frederick II and represented the interests of Prussia in numerous diplomatic missions.
