A large KPM porcelain vase and cover from Berlin Palace.

Porcelain. The body decorated with two oval reserves surrounding scenes from the myth of Achilles. Underglaze blue scepter mark. The cover glued over a breakage. H 48.5 cm.
KPM Berlin, ca. 1780.

The "Mahagony Cabinet" was among the royal rooms in the first floor of Berlin Palace leading from the Schlossfreiheit to the Lustgarten wing which were redecorated for King Frederick William II by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff. The plaster ceiling and the floor of the cabinet were decorated with mythological scenes corresponding to the decor of this vase. In 1894 the cabinet was destroyed to allow for the redecoration of the Weisser Saal.

Provenance

Formerly kept in the Mahagony Cabinet of Berlin Palace. Labelled "Schloss Berlin Zimmer Nr. 141 Lfdn Nr. 21" to the inside of the vase.
