The engravings on the lid of this tankard have an interesting story to tell: The Norwegian pirate captain Anders Marstrand (1671 - 1724) fought in the Northern Wars under the command of Admiral Tordenskjold. In the summer of 1717 his frigate, the "Ebenezer von Bergen", was captured by the Swedish navy off the coast of Danzig. On 12th July the entire crew was brought to Växjo in Sweden and put under arrest. After two years in captivity they were pardoned by the Swedish General Count Axel Baner, and Anders Marstrand and his men were released in October 1719. This tankard was apparently given as a gift of thanks for the civility with which they were treated whilst in captivity. The medallion with a portrait of the Danish-Norwegian Queen is surrounded by the engraved names of Anders Marstrand and his crew.
