Peter Brüning

Nr. 32
1960

Oil on canvas. 110 x 130 cm. Framed. Signed and dated 'Brüning 60'. Verso on canvas numbered '32'. - Minor traces of age.

Peter Brüning's dynamic gestural compositions have become symbolic for the Informel. According to Marie-Luise Otten, his works from the year 1960 are characterised by a unique artistic level of maturity and a pictorial coherence: “While the paintings from the year 1959 are characterised by large-scale informal stylistic elements […], the paintings from the year 1960, despite all their noticeable spontaneity, appear more elaborate and in their detailed and shortened gestures, more creative. By means of this transformed sign language, very balanced - one might even say intelligent - compositions now often develop whose constantly modified variations let the paintings of the whole year appear as a homogeneous group. The impression arises that all elements of the personal stylistic language to date, that have been achieved step by step, are reflected here and have changed in character due to the free combination with one another, and thus give rise to new constellations within the composition.” (Marie-Luise Otten, Peter Brüning, Studien zu Entwicklung und Werk, Werkverzeichnis, Cologne 1988, p.148/149)
