Coloured chalk and pen and ink on paper 13.9 x 21.7 cm Framed under glass. Black estate stamp "FEININGER ESTATE" lower right and dated 'Fri. 7. July 1911" in black pen and ink upper right. - Two punch holes in upper margin. Weak, diagonal fold lower right.
From the beginning of June until the end of September, Lyonel Feininger spent the summer of 1911 at the seaside resort of Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom; during his travels shortly beforehand, he had experienced important stimuli for his future creative work. The bright beach scene is a particularly beautiful example of Feininger's ongoing interest for landscape and sea. Drawn in quick strokes, the soft ease of the summery Baltic Sea coast comes alive instantly.
