Watercolour and pencil on watercolour laid paper 61.7 x 48.2 cm, framed under glass. Signed, dated and titled 'Heckel 44 Schwäbische Lschaft II' [sic] lower right. - In good condition with fresh colours, with an inconspicuous small brown stain showing through in the lower right corner.

The work is registered with the archive of the Erich Heckel Estate, Hemmenhofen. We would like to thank Hans Geissler and Renate Ebner for their kind information.

For the year 1944, five watercolours with the same title are registered with the archive of the Erich Heckel Estate. Depicted here is the countryside near Schwäbisch Gmünd, where Heckel passed through in May 1944 in search of accommodation after his studio in Berlin had been hit by a bomb.
