According to the kind note from Christine Manessier, the artist's daughter, the two lines on the reverse come from a hymn by the Spanish mystic Saint Jean de la Croix. In 1958, the "Cantiques spirituels" by Saint Jean de la Croix, Édition des Sept, Paris, were published with 12 colour lithographs by the artist.
