An Edo school ivory netsuke of a dragon and a tabako-bon, by Chikuyôsai. Mid 19th century

A dragon that has risen from the tube, which serves for the pipe’s ashes, coils its body around a tobacco tray with a square handle. Signed Chikuyôsai.
Height 2.8 cm

The representation refers to the saying “haifuki kara ryû” (the dragon rising from the ash pot) which means “an unexpected thing may happen any time”.
