Two Landscapes with Allegorical Depictions of Months

Oil on canvas (relined). 94.5 x 135 cm and 94 x 135 cm.

Due to their subject and format the compositions belong to the type of decorative rather than easel painting. As part of a set of six and considering their large dimensions, they must have been created for a large private interior. Their recently refreshed colours and style reveal a typical 17th-century Flemish character. The winter scene seems to evoke a view of Antwerp while the summer suggests the surrounding countryside with rocky mountains reminiscent of its painter Patenier.
Both compositions linking the months and zodiac signs are built similarly. Fortuna and Juno enthroned on chariots drawn by two sheep are escorted by two standard bearers Marte with the ram and Ivni with the crab. The topic with its highly decorative setting suggest a cultured and wealthy patron.
