Flemish late 15th century

A 15th century Flemish oakwood figure of a monk with a book.

Carved three quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Minor remains of former polychromy.. A figure designed for a frontal viewpoint of a tonsured monk in a long habit, shoulder cloth and cloak, holding an open book in his right hand. The figure may have once held an abbot's crozier in the left hand. This fine piece displays a naturalistic physiognomy and a detailed pattern of drapery.
The extended left hand is a replacement. With fine vertical cracks and minor wear. Height 65 cm.
