Heinrich Bürkel

The Toppled Post Carriage

Oil on canvas (relined). 28 x 37.5 cm.
Signed lower right: HBürkel.

Heinrich Bürkel was a friend of Spitzweg and Adalbert Stifter, and was one of the most important painters of the Biedermeier era in Munich. He depicted both the people of his time and the Bavarian landscape with a sure eye and a touch of satire. His career was hugely successful, despite the fact that the Munich academy at first refused to teach him. Bürkel was greatly influenced by studying the works of the old masters, especially those of the Netherlands, who are represented in numerous fine quality works in the collections of Munich.
