The Baptism of Christ

Oil on panel (parquetted), with guild mark of Lambert Steen (active until ca. 1635). 54 x 89 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Brueghel 1630.

This composition is based on an invention of Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hans Rottenhammer which is now kept in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. There are various variations of this composition, and later versions by Jan Brueghel the Younger as well as Hendrick and Jan van Balen.

Provenance

Haus Schaumburg Lippe since the 19th century. - Schloß Vietgest (Mecklenburg Vorpommern). - Restored to the rightful owner in 1994. - Private collection, North-Rhine Westphalia since 1995.
