Frederik de Moucheron

Southern Landscape with Shepherds

Oil on canvas (relined). 66.5 x 82 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Moucheron ft: Ao 1667..

Moucheron moved to Amsterdam in his early years. According to Houbraken, he was taught to paint there by Jan Asselijn. He is known to have spent a longer period in France, and the large number of drawings by the artist depicting views of Northern Italy indicate that he also took a sojourn there. Moucheron is among the so-called “Italianate” landscape painters, who drew their inspiration from the motifs and warm light of the Italian peninsula. Moucheron's colour palette appears brighter and more silvery than that of the slightly earlier Italianate painters Jan Asselijn and Jan Both, which can be seen as an early indicator of the changing tastes of the 18th century. The painting is housed in a richly decorated carved wooden frame with Regence ornaments.
