Wilhelm Gentz
Egyptian Nile Landscape with Flamingoes and Pelicans
Oil on canvas (relined). 93 x 154 cm.
Signed lower right: W. Gentz.
Wilhelm Gentz's educational sojourns had such a lasting impact on his career that almost all of his works depict the landscapes, cultures, and peoples of far-off, exotic lands. His favourite destination was Egypt: he undertook six sojourns there, and had his own studio in Cairo. This Nile landscape with flamingoes, pelicans, and the pyramids bathed in soft light sensitively captures the romantic atmosphere of the Orient.
