Summery depictions of his home in the Lower Rhine Region predominate in Clarenbach's late work, to which the present canvas belongs. These works contrast sharply to the grey winter landscapes of the Rhineland with which he is usually associated. Clarenbach uses a distinctly pastose brushwork for the trees, meadow, and scarecrows, often leaving the grounded canvas visible in areas. With original label to verso: "Max Clarenbach, Wittlaer b. Kaiserswerth a. Rh., Haus Clarenbach“ hand-numbered "13" and with the title “Sommerwolken" (Summer Clouds).
