Eugenio Lucas Villamil was the son of the painter Eugenio Lucas Velázquez and was just 12 years old when his father died. Like Velázquez, Villamil orientated himself on the great Francisco de Goya, and his influence is clearly evident in the present work. The piece shows a lively scene of the Plaza de Toros in Madrid after a shower of rain. A similar composition with the arena on the left was sold by Christies in London in 2011.
