The Russian painter Nikolai Sverchkov's first exhibition was held in 1844. His painting “Return from the Bear Hunt” of 1863 was purchased by Napoleon III, and after this he also painted for Tsar Alexander II. The present work was given as a gift by the artist to the Hamburg businessman Gustav Ludwig Albers, whose firm “Kunst und Albers”, founded in Vladivostok in 1864, was largely responsible for the construction of the Trans-Siberian railway.

Given as a gift by the artist to Gustav Ludwig Albers in Russia before 1880. - Henceforth in family possession.
