Buchner's ascription to the Nuremberg painter Jacob Elsner from 1953 is no longer accepted for this work. The painter of this portrait instead probably belonged to the South German circle of this artist. Inspection under UV light has proven the second line of the inscription to the upper right, in which the work is dated, to be a subsequent addition.
