The present work is presumed to be a preliminary sketch for Simone Cantarini's eponymous etching. The Deicker collection houses a further sketch, and yet another is kept in the British Museum. The present sheet is characterised by its precise, less spontaneous hand, and is therefore thought to be the final step in the development of the composition.
