Ernst Sager is mainly remembered for the excellent flower paintings he carried out for the Royal Berlin porcelain manufactory. After being taught under Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker, Sager later superseded him as head of the flower painting department in the manufactory. Although Sager created numerous works on canvas alongside his porcelain works, many of which were featured in the exhibitions of the Dresden and Berlin academies, the present work is one of just a few of his known works in this medium. Although he has followed his specialisation in the choice of this piece's motif, Sager has here skilfully combined the opulent still life of flowers and fruit with a gothic architectural background.
