Ludwig Elsholtz

The Chance Quarry

Oil on canvas. 32 x 40 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: L. Elsholtz 1840.

Despite his relatively short life, Ludwig Elsholtz was able to leave behind a considerable oeuvre. He first specialised in military and battle paintings, for example his selection of works commissioned by the Prussian royal family on the subject of the German campaign which are today kept in the Berlin National Gallery. Elsholtz later became one of the co-creators of Berlin's bougoise-comical style of genre painting. The present work belongs to this latter phase in his oeuvre and shows a group of peasant girls fleeing from a Sunday hunting party.
Elsholtz participated in the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy as of 1824, and the present work was shown there under no. 157 in 1840.
