A South German baroque ormolu mounted inlaid chest of drawers.

Of serpentine form with four drawers, inlaid decor in various woods, brass, tortoiseshell and tin. Restored, missing metal parts of the veneer replaced in wood, the feet later.
Probably Augsburg or Munich, 1st quarter 18th C.

Two similarly decorated pieces are kept in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich. All the fronts and the tops of these pieces are richly decorated with boulle marquetry and they are, unlike the present work, signed by Johann Puchwiser and dated. Although the design of these pieces varys, the maker of the present work must have been acquainted with them as well as other Munich designs, as the inlays are heavily influenced by Puchwiser's desks. Therefore it is likely that this chest of drawers was made in South Germany, most probably Bavaria.

Provenance

Private ownership, Rhineland.
