A rare Meissen beaker in a gilt metal and tortoiseshell trembleuse mount.

Thin-walled porcelain decorated to one side with a large gilt cartouche containing a half-length figure of a man writing a letter before a view of a city under siege. The other side with a contrasting kakiemon style depiction of a boy. Iron red dash mark. H of beaker 7.8 cm.
Ca. 1722 - 25, the decor generally attributed to Johann Gregorius Hoeroldt.

This style of decor, which creates a feeling of perspective and tension through the juxtaposition of the half-length figure placed in the front of the frame and the far horizon of the background was introduced relatively early on by Hoeroldt.
