Cecco di Pietro

The Baptism of Christ

Tempera on panel. 22.8 x 29.8 cm.

Cecco di Pietro was one of the most famous artists of the trecento in Pisa. Several sources from various times mention his work in this city, and thus it is assumed that he rarely left. However, his works show stylistic parallels to the painting of Siena. Cecco's seminal work is the polyptych of Agnano, a signed work dated 1386. As noted by Laura Cavazzini (op.cit.), the present composition shows the most similarity with another work by this artist, namely a predella panel with the Crucifixion dated circa 1386/95 and kept in the Museo Nazionale San Matteo in Pisa. The embossed patterns in the halos are almost identical, and the angels are also highly similar. Another parallel is the dark outlines of the figures, already faintly present in the Agnano polyptych, which serves to differentiate the saints from the pale gold ground.
