Rogier van der Weyden, circle of

Maria Lactans

Oil on panel (parquetted). 43 x 34 cm.

The most famous depiction of the Maria Lactans motif in Rogier van der Weyden's oeuvre is that in “Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin” in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. However, the present work shows more similarity to a Madonna Lactans in the Art Institute Chicago attributed to van der Weyden's workshop. The graceful, attenuated fingers, the placement of the hands and the Virgin's facial features in the present work all display parallels to both these paintings.
