The name “Master of the Female Half-Lengths” was given to this unidentified painter due to the large number of unsigned works with this motif attributed to him. These pieces generally show half-length depictions of elegantly dressed women with fine features, often reading or making music. This compositional scheme was followed with just a few exceptions throughout his entire extensive oeuvre, a singular phenomenon in the history of Dutch painting in 1525-1550. The artist's style is close to that of Adriaen Isenbrant and Ambrosius Benson.
