Saint Jerome in his Study
Oil on panel. 82 x 72 cm.
This depiction of Saint Jerome in his study resting his head in his hand and pointing to a skull is based on Albrecht Dürer's 1521 work in Lisbon. Many artists have adopted this motif, including such greats as Joos van Cleve and Coecke van Aelst, enriching it with their own ideas. The present work follows this tradition, but the abundance of motifs and slightly angular style of painting indicates it to be the work of a German, rather than a Netherlandish, artist.
Private collection, Spain.
