The Saints Paul and Barnabas in Lystra

Oil on panel (parquetted). 77 x 107.5 cm.

The subject of the present work is one from the Acts of the Apostles (14:11-13). Here it is written that Saint Paul travelled together with Saint Barnabas to the town of Lystra in what is now Turkey. After the miraculous healing of a lame man, the townspeople began worshipping Paul as God and bringing sacrifices to him. The Apostle of course refused this treatment, instead explaining himself to be a messenger of God bringing the Good Word. This painting depicts the biblical scene within an impressive and richly populated architectural backdrop.
