The Battle of Zama

Oil on copper. 40 x 49 cm.

The battle of Zama was the largest battle to take place in North Africa during the second punic war. Hannibal's Carthaginian forces fought against those of the Roman general Cornelius Scipio. The defeat in this battle weakened Carthage so considerably that it was never again able to threaten Rome's hegemony in the Mediterranean. Numerous early modern artists have depicted this battle in painting, including Biagio d´Antonio and Hans Burgkmair the Elder.
