Louis de Caullery

Judith with the Head of Holofernes

Oil on panel. 28 x 60 cm.

Louis de Caullery was born in Caulery near Cambrai. He was accepted as a pupil of Joos de Momper in Antwerp and joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1602. The guild is known to have paid for his burial following his death in 1621. No trip to Italy is recorded, but it is thought that he must have been there due to the appearance of Venetian events and scenes that take place in Italianate palaces in many of his works. His palette also betrays a penchant for Veronese green and burgundy, and his figures a knowledge of Venetian painting. The inclusion of the many delicate and finely painted figures is typical of his oeuvre. Figures such as these can be found in works depicting Venus and allegories of spring as well as densely populated Calvary scenes.
