Seascape with Boats on the Water

This small seascape from a private collection has been identified as a previously unknown work by Jan Brueghel the Younger, which Klaus Ertz has included in the painter's oeuvre after examining the painting first hand. As with many paintings by this artist, the composition is based on a drawing by his father Jan Brueghel the Elder (Cabinet des Dessins du Louvre, cf. F. Lugt: Inventaire Général de Dessins de Ècoles du Nord. École flamande, I, 1949, p. 36, no. 483, illus. XXXVIII), however, the buildings in this version differ slightly.
