Jan van Goyen

Halt in Front of a Tavern

Oil on panel. 32.5 x 52.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: VGoyen 1635.

Along with the boat and ferry, the horse and cart is one of the most popular motifs used by van Goyen. In this painting it is the central motif and, along with the surrounding figures, attracts the immediate attention of the viewer. The painting was made in the mid 1630s. In terms of style it belongs to a transitional period towards the late monochrome paintings of van Goyen. A yellow-gold palette acts in contrast to the grey and white of the sky and dominates the painting.
