This finely painted work on copper is a small format copy of a larger composition by the Antwerp painter Gerard Segher, who alongside Rubens and van Dyck was one of the most important artists of the Flemish Baroque. The piece is one of Segher's later works and is now kept in Petworth House in Sussex. The fact that the composition is mirrored in this version indicates that it was copied from Paulus Pontius's engraving.
