A Tree Lined Avenue with Figures

Oil on canvas (relined). 49 x 72.5 cm.

The greyish silvery palette, clear atmosphere and perfect perspective of the buildings surrounding this tree lined avenue are characteristic of Francesco Battaglioli's style. Filippo Pedrocco considered the present work one of the most accomplished pieces made by the painter prior to his moving to Madrid (exhibition catalogue Milan). Battaglioli moved to Spain in 1754 where he was appointed court architectural and veduta painter as successor to his teacher Antonio Joli. Pedrocco establishes a date for the work in around 1752/54 based on the fact that the figures were not painted by Francesco Zugno, with whom Battaglioli always cooperated upon his return to Venice in 1769. The dabbed style of the delicate and lively figures populating this boulevard are more akin to the work of Gaspare Diziani, who was already dead upon Battaglioli's return.

Certificate
