Ferdinand Brütt spent the new year period of 1889/1890 with his family on the island of Capri and this nocturne, the whereabouts of which were previously unknown to researchers, was almost certainly painted during this stay. Brütt has depicted a decorative fountain in quick, broad strokes of blue and purple, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of the Italian villa garden by night. During this holiday he also painted a charming Christmas themed work showing his daughter Charlotte with Santa Claus, as well as a work entitled “Auf Wiedersehen” with an Italian Villa as a backdrop (cf. Bastek, ibid., p. 236f).
