Probably Spain

A presumably Spanish 14th century processional cross.

Cast, rolled, engraved and chased copper and brass with enamel and remains of former gilding. With engraved floral decor to the front and back of the cross beams. The front of the cross bears a cast metal Corpus Christi, flanked to the left and right sides by Mary and St. John and surmounted by an angel. The figure emerging from a sarcophagus at the base of the cross can be identified as Adam, the first man, who was redeemed by Christ's death. The horizontal beams of the cross bear enamel depictions of the two thieves. The terminals to the reverse of the cross are decorated with the symbols of the evangelists and it displays an enamel depiction of Christ as Salvator Mundi to the centre.
