Flemish ca. 1530/1540

A Flemish oak figure of Saint Roch, circa 1530/40.

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. Minor remains of former polychromy. A finely carved figure of the patron saint of plague victims displaying an open sore on his exposed thigh. A further attribute of his, the dog, is shown sitting at his feet, and the pilgrim's staff in his extended right hand is lost. Saint Roch wears a girded robe beneath a long tippet, his youthful face is framed by strands of curly hair and a hat bearing an image of Christ to the brim. The piece is characterised by the detailed and naturalistic fall of drapery in the Saint's clothing.
A breakage to the front of the plinth. Minor replacements to the hat brim and chest. Some wear. Height 100 cm.
