France mid-14th century

A mid-14th century French ivory figure of the Virgin and Child.

Carved in the round, the underside hollowed out.. A finely carved depiction of the Virgin, designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is depicted crowned and standing with Her torso leant back slightly, holding a flower in Her lowered right hand. She carries the Christ Child, who holds an imperial orb in both hands, with Her left arm. The Virgin wears a shoulder length veil beneath Her crown. Her high-waisted gown falls in vertical folds and is framed to the sides by the symmetrically curved hems of Her open cloak.
The lower centre of the hem of the gown and the Child's head partially repaired with wax. With a vertical, probably glued, crack to the front and back. The reverse yellowed. Height 14.5 cm.
