South German 17th century

A 17th century South German ivory figure of a resting soldier.

Carved in the round, the back flattened. A high-relief figure of a soldier in armour, shown in profile facing left and sleeping with his head resting in his hand. The piece probably originally formed part of a relief showing the resurrection of Christ.
Vertical hairline cracks and slight yellowing to the reverse, minor remains of a dowel to the lower edge. Height 6.5 cm.
