Max Slevogt

Stilleben mit Eiern und Zitrusfrüchten
1925

Oil on canvas 55.5 x 70.5 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Slevogt 1925' lower left. - With craqueleur in places and few minute losses of colour.

Slevogt, who was primarily a highly esteemed portrait and landscape painter, did not return to still life painting again until the early 1920s. Particularly attractive in this composition are the light entering from the upper left as well as the sensitive colour accord, which is harmoniously held in gently played out tones of yellow-orange and green-blue. With sparing colouristic means, he achieves an elegant, cool, almost silvery chromatic mood. This work displays the artist's pleasure in the depiction of opaque, shiny or also transparent objects, whose primary task is to reflect light. The composition, convincing in its simplicity, as well as the proficient and loose application of the paint suggest a renewed occupation of the artist with Manet's work, with which he had already become familiar as early as 1899 in Paul Cassirer's gallery and later at the exhibitions of the Secession.
