Georg Kolbe
Kopf Malain
1916
Bronze Height 18 cm. Mounted on mottled grey stone base (11 x 7 x 7 cm) Monogrammed 'GK' (joined) on the side of the neck to the right as well as with foundry mark "NOACK BERLIN" on the left side of the attachment. Posthumous cast. - With olive-coloured, slightly shiny patina.
According to Ursel Berger, probably only one bronze cast was carried out during the artist's lifetime: for the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 1918. The posthumous edition is unknown until now. As "Malain's" head shows, Asian models played an important role in Kolbe's early work. Kolbe also made a life-size statue "Malain" in 1916.
