Watercolour over preparatory pencil drawing on heavy watercolour laid paper 46.9 x 36.6 cm Framed under glass. Monogrammed 'KL' in brown lower right. - The sheet trimmed in the lower margin; partially minimal paper rubbing.

Following the educational years in his hometown Essen (Kunstgewebeschule), Berlin (Staatl. Hochschule für Bildende Kunst) and Pforzheim (enamel technique), Kurt Lewy was a freelance artist since 1925. Dismissed from his appointment at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Essen in 1935, Lewy emigrated to Brussels; during the war he was interned temporarily. He created coloured glass windows for the new synagoge in Essen (cf. Deutsche Biographische Enzyklopädie, Munich/Leipzig 1995-2003).
