Ewald Mataré
Weihwasserschale mit Taube
Circa 1947
Bronze 29 x 34.9 cm Unsigned. One of 3 known casts. - With fine, even reddish-brown patina.
The holy water bowl was created for the crypta of the Haus der Volksarbeit, St. Michael in Frankfurt; the hollowed-out back of the pigeon served as the receptacle for holy water. The catalogue raisonné lists 2 casts in private possession, including the present object. - Rare.
Mataré created the pigeon's body from ebony (Schilling 147, with stone inlay) as a bowl for holy water as early as circa 1937; apparently, this dating from the 1930s for the present post-war bronze was also readily transferred into earlier exhibition catalogues.
