Alice Sommer initially attended the Königlich-Sächsische Kunstgewerbeschule before continuing her education at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Dresden. Her portraits are characterised by concise, coloured and vivid modelling. They particularly convey the intellectual apprehension of her vis-à-vis. Although Sommer made use of the then contemporary formal principles of Expressionism and The New Objectivity, she successfully developed her very own painting style.
