Antonia del Massaro da Viterbo, called Il Pastura

The Virgin and Child

Oil on panel (parquetted). 32 x 24 cm.

Antonia del Massaro da Viterbo, called Il Pastura, is recorded in Rome in 1478 and was influenced by Perugino and Pinturicchio. He painted decorations for the apartments of the Borgia Pope Alexander VI in the Vatican from 1492 to 1494, and later returned to Orvieto. There, he is presumed to have painted scenes of the Annunciation, Visitation, Presentation in the Temple, and the Flight into Egypt for the cathedral between 1497 and 1499. “Il Pastura” painted the present, small-format work for private devotion. The Virgin's graceful features display a tender, motherly care for the Christ Child, who holds the orb as a symbol of majesty in his hand.
