Margreet Nouwen has confirmed that this drawing is presumably from a sketchbook that the artist took up in the evening, sitting on the terrace of the Hotel Huis ter Duin in Noordwijk: “Because the bathing machines have been pulled far up on to the beach and an unharnessed horse is standing between them, I guess that the sketch was made at the end of the day. This impression is reinforced by the fact that the two people next to each other look out across the sea: it is quite possible that they are watching the sunset, which, of course, along the Dutch coast, occurs over the sea .” (note of 29 March 2016)
