Bourdillon was the son of a British civil servant and was born in India. He first worked on a coffee plantation and painted in his spare time. However, at the encouragement of a friend he later moved to London to study painting. Following a year-long stay in Paris he settled in Oxford and worked there as an artist. His work was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886. Bourdillion was a member of the then revolutionary New English Art Club and became most well known for his landscapes and figure paintings.
