Henriette Browne

Reading the Bible
1853

Oil on canvas (relined). 55.6 x 47 cm.
Signed lower right: Henriette Browne.

'Henriette Browne' was the pseudonym of Sophie de Bouteiller, a Paris born painter and engraver, who was married with the diplomat Henry Jules de Saux. After learning to paint under Penn and Chaplin, the artist turned to portrait and genre painting, concentrating mainly on scenes of families and children, and later oriental motifs. Her works were exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853 and later at the Royal Academy from 1871-79. Thieme-Becker mention that this piece was presented to the salon in 1853.
Browne's oeuvre is characterised by her interest in everyday life and the accurate portrayal of reality - qualities typical of the French realist movement emerging in the 1840s.
