Heinrich Bürkel

Winter Landscape with an Overturned Hay Wagon

Oil on canvas, mounted on wood. 16 x 23.5 cm.
Signed lower left: Bürkel.

The overturned hay wagon is a commonly reoccurring motif in the oeuvre of Heinrich Bürkel, one of the most important genre and landscape painters in 19th century Munich. The motif can be found both in summer and winter landscapes. Hans-Peter Bühler and Albrecht Krückl's catalogue raisonné lists 17 variations on the theme in summer landscapes (H.-P. Bühler & A. Krückl: Heinrich Bürkel, Munich 1989, cat. rais. nos. 38-54), but the winter version is much rarer with just two listed works (nos. 743 & 744). The present, and apparently third, winter variation originates from the collection of the Cologne based art connoisseur Philipp Engels, whose estate was sold by J. M. Heberle (H. Lempertz) in Cologne on 16th May 1867 (lot 10).
We would like to thank Albrecht Krückl in Munich for his kind assistance in cataloguing this work. He dates the painting to around 1843/45 and will be including it in the supplement to the catalogue raisonné.
