Ernst Deger

The Virgin as Queen of Heaven

Oil on canvas (relined). 105 x 58.5 cm.

This depiction of the Virgin in a simultaneously majestic and contemplative aspect with the lively Christ child on her arm is a smaller replica of the large format altarpiece painted by Ernst Deger for the Church of St. Andrew in Düsseldorf which is among the most well-known works of the Düsseldorf School of painters. Deger was involved in the decoration of the important Gothic Revival style church of St. Apollinaris in Remagen and was also commissioned to decorate the chapel at Stolzenfels Castle by the Prussian King Frederick William IV. The present image appears to be housed in the original, arch-shaped frame.
